Algae Control
Best Tips for Algae Control
Algae are microscopic aquatic plants constantly being introduced into the pool water from the environment. If not controlled, algae can discolor your pool water, clog your filter, create unpleasant odors and produce slimy, slippery walls and floors.
Algae growth generally establishes when the water’s disinfectant level or algaecide content is low or neglected.
Type of Algae and Treatment
Green Algae
The most common. A cloudy green appearance of the water identifies it.
Treatment
Shock treat the pool at a rate of 1 lb. per 5,000 gallons. Then, add GLB Algimycin 2000 or Algae X according to instructions.
Mustard Algae
Complex algae to control. The cloudy greenish-yellow color of the water identifies it.
Treatment
Shock treat the pool at a rate of 1 lb. per 5,000 gallons. Then, add GLB Strike Out according to instructions.
Black Algae
Black algae identify by dark green slippery patches clinging to floors and walls.
Treatment
Shock treat the pool at a rate of 1 lb. per 5.000 gallons. Then, add GLB Algimycin 1000 according to instructions.
Pink Algae
Frequently called “Red Algae.”
This is a bacteria that algaecides cannot prevent. The best prevention is maintaining an adequate chlorine residual.
Treatment
Shock treat the pool at a rate of 1 lb. per 5,000 gallons. Then, add GLB Algimycin 2000 or Algae X according to the instructions.
Persistant Algae
If an algae problem exists, run the filtrations system continuously for at least 72 hours.
In addition, the pool surface should be brushed daily. This will remove dead layers of algae and allow the chemicals to combat the remaining layers of algae growth.
