Which is Better: Fiberglass or Vinyl Liner Pools?

Fiberglass Pools

Advantages

  • Warranty: Most pool manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty on the pool shell
  • Fast installation: Depending on the weather, the pool could be installed and ready to swim in as little as a few weeks
  • Less Maintenance: Algae growth is reduced due to the fiberglass pool’s outer layer, requiring less chemical use.
  • Minimal lifetime cost: No need for resurfacing or replacing a liner.
  • Built-in Features: Many fiberglass pool designs offer seating and built-in steps.
  • Nonabrasive interior: The inside of a fiberglass pool is always smooth to the touch. You will not scrape your skin with this type of pool.

Disadvantages

  • Limited types and designs: One’s choices may be limited due to the limited mold types offered by the manufacturer. However, new models are continuously being added.
  • Width limitations: Fiberglass pools are freighted. The width of most fiberglass pools is 16′ or less.
  • Cost: Starting out, the cost of a Fiberglass pool is roughly $50,000.

Vinyl Liner Pools

Advantages

  • Cost: Lower initial cost compared to fiberglass pools. Starting roughly $40,000. However, the liners typically need to be replaced around 7 to 10 years and given more time if properly maintained.
  • Customizable with measurements: When choosing a vinyl liner pool, there are fewer size and circumference limitations than fiberglass.
  • Vinyl liner pools are nonabrasive: The plastic pool liner material is sleek to your touch and will not scratch the skin.

Disadvantages

  • Greater lifetime expense: On average, a liner can last about eight years with a replacement cost of at least $2,500-$3,500 and the cost of water.
  • Easily damaged: Children with sharp toys and pets can damage pool liners. The liner is about 20-28 mil dense, the width of several sheets of paper. One mistake can be costly!
  • Algae: Because the seams can harbor algae, additional maintenance and chemicals may be needed.
  • Built-in features: Seating and steps are optional and at an additional cost.
